Together we won't be ConDemned PDF Print E-mail

The dust has settled after the election and not only are Labour the only party fighting the cuts at county hall the fight has arrived at Westminster.

After the narrow ConDem win in the student fees vote Ashfield District Council has been revealed as one of the joint hardest hit Councils in the country following Lib Dem and Tory cuts to local government. Despite our community having the challenges of economic regeneration following the Tory legacy of the 1980's and 1990's the cuts we face is 8.9% of the budget.

This is the same amount as our neighbours Bolsover whilst the Tory Rushcliffe Council in Notts is only facing cuts of 5.79%. These cuts along with the other policies of the ConDem government have ignored the bankers and have focused on ordinary working folk such as the people in Ashfield.

The cuts in local government, to the police and the increases in student fees illustrate how the interests of the government are not on the streets of places like Sutton, Eastwood and Kirkby. The cabinet of Tory and Lib Dem millionaires have made it clear they put their interests first.

The Ashfield Labour party is working hard to fight the cuts and is the only political party that is standing up for our communities, help us with this fight and join us.

Gloria's post-election report

It was a very short campaign in which I and the Labour Team were out campaigning all day, everyday, meeting people from all over the constituency. Right now, I am busy meeting as many of you as possible and we've set up an office in Kirkby and an office in Parliament so that I can work with you to solve any problems. I will be having roving surgeries across the constituency and I'll be inviting you to meet me for a chat at coffee mornings too.

I promised when I met you during the campaign that I would work hard for you as an MP- and that’s a promise I intend to keep! Our biggest problem now is that the Tories and Lib Dems are in power and the axe has already started to fall. The child trust fund has gone and so have minimum waiting times at Accident and Emergency.

I know these things will concern many of you. I also know that many of you are worried about building on our green spaces and I want you to know that I’ll support the residents of Kirkby, Sutton and Brinsley in their campaigns against these proposals in whatever way I can. We have plenty of brownfield sites to build on- let's use those before destroying more of Englands green and pleasant land.

Jason Lets Us Down Again

Ashfield Lib Dem Leader Kicked Off Police Authority

Labour’s Gloria De Piero today joined people across Ashfield and Eastwood in expressing “astonishment and disbelief that Liberal Democrat Leader Jason Zadrozny is set to be kicked off Nottinghamshire Police Authority at its next meeting on April 20th.
Talking to people across Ashfield and Eastwood Gloria knows that  tackling Crime is the number one priority locally. Nottinghamshire Police Authority has a vital role to play in holding the Police to account and ensuring they improve their performance – especially important when Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has singled out the force’s need to improve.
It is beyond belief that an elected official given the opportunity to tackle crime would show their contempt for the people of Ashfield and Eastwood by failing month after month to turn up to essential meetings.
Zadrozny has been receiving £10,979 pro rata of taxpayers’ money annually for serving on the Police Authority. After failing to show for three months under the Authority’s rules he will be kicked off at its next meeting on Tuesday.
At a time when every penny of public money counts to take taxpayers cash and then not bother to turn up is disgraceful and will cause real anger across Ashfield and Eastwood. Gloria has called on Cllr Zadrozny to return every penny he has received back to Nottinghamshire Police Authority so that it can be spent on the frontline protecting local people.
The latest revelation follows the official independent watchdog dubbing Ashfield District Council as ‘poor’ whilst Zadrozny was in charge.
First Jason let Ashfield down when he ran the council. Now he has let local people down again by failing to do his job on the Police Authority.
